Heinrich Franz Alexander von Eggers

(1844 - 1903)

Botanist and soldier. Born in Slesvig (Schleswig). Danish army officer during the Danish-Prussian war in 1864. Volunteer in the Austian military force in Mexico 1865-67. Lived 1869-1887 in the Danish West Indies; officer in the Danish West Indian forces 1869-85. Lived 1893-97 in Ecuador. Has collected extensively in the West Indies and South America, especially in the Danish West Indies (now Virgin Islands), Dominica, St. Kitts, Porto Rico, Jaimaica, Cuba, Bahama Islands, Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbados, Venezuela and Ecuador. Unfortunately, Warming fell out with Eggers during the preparations for a trip which Warming was to make to Venezuela and the Antilles 1891-92, and which Eggers has been ordered to prepare. Since, Eggers sent his collections to Berlin, and willed his main herbarium to the Botanical Museum in Lund, Sweden.
