Research interests: Taxonomy of vascular plants, especially taxonomy of the order Urticales; vascular plants of Africa, especially flora of the Horn of Africa (Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia); plant geography and plant biodiversity of Africa and ecology of African vegetation, especially forests and woodlands in East Africa and on the Horn of Africa; botanical nomenclature; history of botany, especially history of the botanical exploration of Africa.
